Toyota continues to top the list for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s awards. Nine Toyota vehicles were IIHS winners, with eight receiving the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation. Toyota models earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Highest Safety Award in Recognition of crashworthiness, front crash prevention and headlight quality.
The 2017 Toyota TOP SAFETY PICK+ winners were:
- Toyota Avalon (with specific headlights and built after March 2017)
- Toyota Prius (built after August 2016)
- Toyota Prius Prime
- Toyota Corolla
- Toyota Camry (with available front crash prevention and specific headlights)
- Toyota Prius v (with available front crash prevention and specific headlights)
- Toyota RAV4 (with specific headlights)
- Toyota Highlander
The 2017 Toyota TOP SAFETY PICK winner was the Toyota Yaris iA.

To qualify for 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK a vehicle must earn good ratings in five crashworthiness tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints — as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.
For a vehicle to qualify to be a TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the five IIHS crashworthiness tests. These include small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. In addition, it must have an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating.
Models that earn TOP SAFETY PICK+ or TOP SAFETY PICK are the best vehicle choices for safety within size categories. Size and weight do influence protection in serious crashes. Larger, heavier vehicles generally afford more protection than smaller, lighter ones. Thus, a small car that's a TOP SAFETY PICK+ or TOP SAFETY PICK doesn't necessarily afford more protection than a bigger car that doesn't earn the award.
